Lines of Symmetry in Polygon

The lines of symmetry in a polygon are the imaginary lines passing through the center of the polygon that divides the shape into similar halves.

As we know, irregular polygons do not have lines of symmetry. So, henceforth in this article, we will only deal with regular polygons.

How Many Lines of Symmetry does a Regular Polygon Have?

The number of lines of symmetry in any polygon can be easily determined by folding that shape along those hypothetical lines such that the resulting shapes are identical halves of the original figure.

Below given are the lines of symmetry found in some commonly studied polygons.

FAQs

Q1. Do irregular polygons never have a line of symmetry?

Ans. Most irregular polygons do not have any line of symmetry; however, there are a few exceptions. For example, a rectangle has two lines of symmetry and an isosceles triangle has one line of symmetry.

Q2. Name the polygon that has nine lines of symmetry.

Ans. The polygon that has nine lines of symmetry is nonagon.
