Net of a Cone

A cone net is a 2-dimensional shape that is folded to form a 3-dimentional cone. It helps to identify how a cone can be prepared and its different parts.

Parts

A cone net has two main parts:

Cone Net
  1. A Circular Base having radius (r).
  2. A lateral surface looking like a sector of a circle. The sector is actually the lateral face of any cone that is unrolled and placed flat. Its radius is the slant height (s) and the perpendicular line joining the center of the circle and the tip of the lateral surface is the height (h).

The making of a cone from its net is shown below:

Types

A cone net can be of three variations based on the lengths of the slant height ‘s’ and the radius ‘r’.

Type 1: When the slant height is equal to twice the radius, the cone net appears, as shown below.

Type 2: When the slant height is greater than twice the radius, the cone net appears, as shown below.

Type 3: When the slant height is lesser than twice the radius, the cone net appears, as shown below.
